Comments below are interesting too.
i agree with the first post... its about serendipity
Because there are no such parts except for a few.“Why do they only show the poverty?”, she wondered. “Why don’t they show all of Mumbai instead of focusing just on Dharavi?”
LMAO..
hahahAren’t Bollywood movies full of stereotypes too - the chain-smoking, hard-drinking villain, the honest hero, the innocent, beautiful, heroine and so on?
I got into a debate about this with a girl yesterday. She was mad that India was depicted like that, when there's so much "beautiful" stuff that should've been shown instead. I was like "but that's the reality of India, there are places like that" and she's like "everytime that I went, I didn't see anyplace like that"
This went back and forth, and eventually I let it go. There was no convincing this girl.
I know when I went to India in 07, I saw the craziest things - kids eatin off the ground, an old lady sleeping on the ground with flies all around her, people with no eyes (only eye sockets) on the train, deformed people that only played with animals, etc. I mean shoot, I stayed in my uncle's house where he BRAGGED about havin hot water...I'm like huh???
I think that's one of the reasons I personally enjoyed the movie, because I saw a lot of that poverty firsthand...it's a harsh reality, but it IS reality.
^
i agree wit you there. my mom brought up the same point in sayin "why do they alway show india like that" bla bla n i told her that well that is the one of the realities in india n if ppl are so ashamed of it then they shud work on how to solve those issues. n then she just sat quietly n just said "well they still shoudlnt show it"![]()
One Luv :)
Sick and tired of hearing about Slumdog Millionaire...Niggas actin like its the greatest invention next to sliced bread...
One word leads to war; one sentence will lead to slaughter; one paragraph brings genocide
The only way to truly kill someone is to love them a little
imagine if the Indians were to field an incredible basketball or soccer team? Probably not, this gives Indians something to be proud of in the same sense that Jamaicans were whylin out when usain bolt was killing it in the Olympics
People don't like taking blame or admitting faults that relate to their heritage. It's a stupid, ridiculous blame-shifting society that we live in.
I think, "don't look down on anybody unless you're going to help them up". So if someone is going to have this view that we should look down on what Slumdog has apparently done, then maybe those same people should put their money where there mouth is and tell us exactly what they have done to depict India in the most beautiful way possible. Without meaning any offense to those people, I wouldn't be suprised if they too have their faults (no one is a perfect angel either).
My point is everyone has faults, everything has faults, every country has faults. But until we admit it, we will never move on from that.
Take a hard look at yourself before you start trying to preach to others!!

There is similar situation going on with H1 Visas for IT workers from India.
Under Obama's stimulus bill, any company that takes "bailout" money can not hire H1 visa people.
There are a bunch of Indians in India complaining about this. For what?
1) American citizens should get preferenial treatment for work in AMERICA.
2) The failure of India to provide competitive jobs and salaries to IT workers is not the fault of America.

I love India, but Indians are the worst for this. I don't like the way it goes in to our mentality so easily. Too much pride is a very, very bad thing. Just because you're INDIAN doesn't mean you're going to get away with everything. No one gets anything for free!
